ATV vs UTV vs SxS: What’s the difference?

It is a commonly asked question we get asked by customers new to powersports: what’s the difference between an ATV, UTV and SxS (side-by-side)?
Here’s a brief beginner’s guide to get you in the know!

ATV

ATV stands for All-Terrain Vehicle, a four-wheeler off-road vehicle with a seat like a motor-cycle and handlebar steering. They are commonly called ‘four-wheelers’ or ‘quad-bikes.’
ATVs normally seat one, though some models can seat two.
Generally they are known for being more affordable on average than a UTV; narrower and therefore more manoeuvrable for tight spaces; and quick to hop on and off.

UTV

UTV is short for Utility Terrain Vehicle. UTVs are also known as side-by-side (SxS) vehicles because they generally have bucket or bench seating in the front for two people to sit next to each other. UTVs do cater for up to six people passengers though, and up to six wheels.
UTVs have a steering wheel and foot pedals, plus a cab and short trailer, and can be kitted out with accessories like doors and windscreens for added comfort and protection. Many hunters and farmers like UTVs for their hauling capacity.

At Aussie Powersports we sell accessories for both ATVs and UTVs, with some fitting both, and others being suited to one or the other. If you have any questions about what accessories will go best with your vehicle, don’t hesitate to give us a call!
